I wish to understand the distribution process for Zakat. In particular, does the beneficiary need to receive the monetary amount or could I spend the money on their behalf for their benefit, for example ,on medicine/healthcare or a water pump or building a house for them?
For Zakat to be valid, it is necessary to give something of monetary value in the ownership of the needy. By merely providing services without giving anything of value to the needy in the ownership is insufficient for Zakat. However, you can purchase items if they have specifically given you instruction or permission to do so.
