Zakat Expert

Mahboob Hussain is the Online Marketing Manager for National Zakat Foundation. Aged 33, he is attempting his first sponsored cycling challenge this month, taking him from London to Paris over the course of 4 days. With only days to go, we spoke to him to find out more about the adventure he is about to embark on.

Why are you participating in the London to Paris bike ride?

I am participating for a number of reasons. First of all, there are many Muslims who need our help that live here in the UK. These include Muslims that are homeless, destitute, elderly, refugees and asylum seekers. Through my fundraising efforts, I would like to facilitate hardship grants to hundreds of our brothers and sisters who are suffering.

It will also be good to re-visit Paris (the hard way!) and meet like-minded people from other mainstream charities. There will be over 100 organisations represented so will be great to undertake such a noble endeavour together.  It will also encourage me to get back in shape, so the rewards are manifold!

Who else are you cycling with?

I will be cycling with my good friend, Sameer Mallick, a medical professional who has been supporting me and giving me expert advice on how to train for this unique trip.

How is your training progressing?

Training is going very well. I never thought of myself as the type to go to the gym religiously 5/6 times, but that has now become my routine. I have managed to get in a few long-distance cycles under my belt which I will increase as we get closer to the event! Training is tough and requires a lot of discipline, but I have a supportive family and a good set of friends to make sure I ‘stick to straight and narrow!’

Has your diet changed at all?

This is a work in progress! Training requires fuel.

What are you most anxious about?

The long-distance, as well as the event being over 4 days.   Fatigue may become an issue. Thankfully, the event organisers, Skyline, have medics and mechanics travelling with us should we need to avail them of their services.

What are you most excited about?

The process of fundraising, training, adventure and excitement. I can’t think of many better ways to achieve so many noble goals with one activity! With Ramadan on the horizon, this is an excellent way of spreading the word about NZF to the masses.

We also have plans to stream parts of the cycling tour online so you will be able to share the excitement with me!

Jazak Allah khair for your kind support.

Helping you bring Zakat to life where you live.
