I can’t afford to pay the Zakat on the gold that I have. What should I do?

Q: I received gold at my wedding and my father has already paid zakat on it for the year before he gave it to me. Do I need to pay Zakat on it this year? What happens if I can’t afford to pay Zakat on it? Do I sell some of it and pay Zakat off?

A: When your zakat anniversary comes, you will have to include the gold in the Zakat calculation. When your father paid the zakat on the gold, it was due to the fact that the zakat became a liability upon him. But now that the ownership of the gold has been transferred, it will be your responsibility to pay the zakat on it.

If you can’t afford to pay the zakat on the gold, then you can sell some of it in order to pay. Or you can ask your husband to pay on your behalf if he agrees to it (although it is not a requirement for him to do so). Or you can pay in instalments as soon as possible and preferably before the next year’s zakat becomes due.
